CARTOON HACKERS

Computer hackers and identity thieves are a horrible fact of life.  Unfortunately, virtually everyone is susceptible.  Although we can’t put all mean people on a desert island with no electronics, there are easy steps all of us can take to be less vulnerable.

1. Passwords

It may seem like a good idea to have an easy to remember password that you don’t have to write down and can use for everything, but it’s not.  Your passwords should be 10-12 characters long.  Mix it up a little with your passwords using numbers, letters, special characters, upper and lowercase.  If you need help remembering your passwords, try a password manager.  You can find out more info about password managers here .

2. Shop Savvy and Secure

Anytime you are entering personal information online, be sure it is Secure.  Don’t worry, you do not have to be a technological savant to do this.  One easy way is to look at the web address, it should contain this at the beginning: http. That stands for secure (note:  it will not be capitalized, emboldened and underlined).

3. Protect your Computer

Protect your computer and information with an antivirus software.  If you are into free, check out this comparison of free antivirus software here. If you receive an unwanted pop up asking if you would like to purchase antivirus software, do not click on it as it is most likely a scam.

These are free, simple ways to look out for yourself and protect your family.  The IRS provides extensive information on how to protect your personal information.  If you would like to read up more or watch tutorials, click here.
